We encourage children to our Practice at a young age to allow them to become familiar with the dentist environment.
Ensuring your child as as little tooth decay as possible isn't easy with the demands of children today, fuelled with advertising and peer pressure. There are many ways to encourage healthy teeth and gums.
A sticky layer forms on teeth called plaque, and this layer contains bacteria. When we eat or drink sugar this bacteria turns to acid and it is this acid that damages and causes decay on our teeth.
70% diet and 30% brushing = decay
- brush children's teeth twice a day using a pea size amount of fluoride
- brush a baby's teeth as soon as they appear
- make it part of a morning routine
- no juice in feeding bottles
- lollipops and sticky chews mean teeth are bathed in sugar for a long time
- let children watch an adult brushing their teeth
- avoid sugar coated cereal - it is like giving your child a sugar mouthwash every morning
